Details on Your Project
You are to create an information brochure to put in residents' letterboxes and an accompanying art brochure to support this. Your brochures will be informing locals about the planned quarry and the impacts that it would have.
Teacher note: if site visits unavailable, provide videos and/or arrange a tour of an operational quarry.
Information Brochure
Part 1
Create an informational brochure to inform locals about the plans for the quarry and its associated impacts.
Use the secondary source information in the "About" tab, research from class (information on habitats, etc.) and your primary source data collected from the excursion.
You need to provide information that answers these questions:
-
What is hapenning with/proposed for the land?
-
How will it effect local residents?
-
Why is the current site important for wildlife?
-
How will it affect wildlife?
You are to create and include a graph in your brochure. The graph will based on one set of data you have collected (eg. current noise readings from each location).
Good brochures balance graphics with text, but because you are creating a seperate graphic, you are to include a maximum of 4 pictures in your information brochure. We want to see what information you know about the issue - this is your chance to show off!
So, more text, less pictures!

Supporting Visual
Part 2
You also need to create an art brochure for locals. Your brochure should use a bi-fold format and include drawings or a collage you have designed referring to the impacts on the wildlife corridor from the Gold Coast quarry.
Be imaginative !
Get creative !
Visuals help to convey a message and attract the reader's attention. Focusing on one species, creatively showcase your understanding of the environmental impacts on the wildlife corridor, using design and art materials of your choice.

Class Excursion to:
A) The Site
We are going on an excursion to the quarry site. You will collect 2 sets of data. In your groups, you will:
-
measure the current noise at the site using decibel readers
-
count the number of bird calls in 15 mins
B) Nearby the West Burleigh Quarry
Here we are collecting another 2 sets of data. In your groups of 6, you will:
-
measure the noise 300m away from the site using decibel readers
-
count the number of trucks that go into the quarry in 15 mins

Survey:
The school community
In your groups, you will create a survey about the proposed quarry to ask members of the school community.
These questions will help you to understand what people don't know about the planned quarry and what information you need to put in your brochure to give to locals.
Some questions to consider are:
-
Have you heard that a company is planning to build a very large quarry in Reedy Creek?
-
Did you know that many animals live in this area, including koalas? Are you worried that their home and food source (trees) will be destroyed?
-
Are you aware that there will be lots of extra trucks in the area if the quarry is built?
Your questions must relate to people's awareness about the quarry (do people know about it?), noise from the quarry if it was to be built, and animal habitat destruction.
