Sustainability means an analysis to see if something is able to be maintained at a certain rate or level. In an environmental sense, sustainability looks at the health of relationships between living things and their environment. If healthy relationships can be maintained consistently over time, an action can be called "sustainable".
In this unit, we are looking at some of the impacts that the construction of a large quarry will have on locals, animals and the environment. A mining company called "Boral" has asked Gold Coast City Council for approval to develop its land into a quarry in Reedy Creek. The land is currently covered in trees and is a home to many plants (flora) and animals (fauna). The land is also very close to houses.
